you can, you can see the trail where the middle schooler was hit. candles and teddy bears have been left here as a somber memorial. she was hit by a white suv. emergency crews rushed to the scene. the girl was taken by ambulance to novato hospital, then airlifted, where she was pronounced dead. authorities say the driver who hit the car stopped at the scene and is cooperating with investigators. >> it changes to 45 and then people really hit the gas coming out this way. >> reporter: i'm taking a live look at the memorial.

you can see people have dropped off teddy bears an memorials and other remembrances. as you heard the neighbor talk about it a moment ago, there are definitely concerns. this scene is about two miles agray another deadly -- away from another deadly accident. they want drivers to be cautious in this area, especially during school hours. an albany schoolteacher accused of having an inappropriate relationship with a former student is scheduled to appear in court this afternoon. the 20-year-old taught school and coached. he's being held on $100,000 bail on committing lewd acts on

a child under the age of 14. the continuing coverage of the occupy protest in san francisco, demonstrators vow they are gonna reoccupy a camp. claudine wong is live and police have been guarding that area for hours. >> reporter: that's right, dave. we're in front of the federal reserve building that's right here. if you take a look down the street, you can see it is clear. now when we have our barricades, you can see those lining the entire front of the federal reserve building. closer to the door, you have federal officers making sure workers only go in and out of here. and the protesters were down here earlier and and the police have been out here and down the street as well.

let me show you video from last night when the -- things got a little heated overnight. this is what happened as five or so protesters were out here. things were kind of calm but then they joined one a group of 40 protesters. police say they started throwing some bottles at them so they called in reinforcement. police in riot gear came. and it's not clear if there were any arrests. we've been talking to people out here this morning. one person said wic -- he would like to see the camp come back. >> you will have differences of opinion but hopefully it won't be too serious. >> reporter: but if you came here and you saw the tents go back, you would be happy to see them? >> yeah, i would. >> reporter: that won't happen, if police can happen.

like that. a deal has been reached to reduce the number of suspensions among african- american students. now, it's a five-year plan. it will at first focus on about half of the schools in the oakland district. officials say african-americans are making up about 32% of the school district's enrollment. but an investigation that was launched this spring showed that last year african-american students received 63% of all suspensions. it is 7:33. new information shows more americans are living in downtown urban areas. 16million americans now live within two miles of a city hall. that's about 6% of the entire american population. researchers believe americans are moving into downtown areas to be closer to their job.

the ballot here in california. federal officials broke up a cocaine ring that was moving drugs from california to colorado every month. here's some of what they confiscated and that it was trafficked from los angeles to the denver area. federal hand local agents worked together to break up the ring and they arrested ten mexican nationals who they say were in the country illegally. >> by this disrupting this ring, more than 55 pounds of cocaine are now on the streets. >> authorities say they seized guns and about $150,000 cash. they say the trucks were smuggled inside -- the drugs were smuggled inside secret comartments in vehicles. governor brown has vetoed a

good morning. welcome back to "mornings on 2." i'm tori campbell. >> good morning. i'm dave clark. it's friday, september 28th. oping our news at 8:00, breaking news from san jose. crews are battling a fire in the city's willow glen neighborhood. janine de la vega has just arrived on the scene. >> reporter: we're here on mulberry lane. this is right near meridian and kurtner. this is still an active scene. there's about five or six engines still here. about 20 firefighters. the flames were shooting out of the roof when the firefighters just got here. let's take a look at video shot. just before 7:00, a neighbor called 911 to report the house next door was on fire.

when firefighters arrived, flames were shooting through the roof. the firefighters started to fight it from the outside but then they switched from going inside the home and enter it, trying to knock it down. we're told a mother and her daughter had woke unup to the sound of their smoke detectors going off and they were able to get out of the house safely. i'm joined by fire captain rob brown. what is the situation right now? >> right now we're in an overhaul phase. we had about 70% of the roof that's been burned off. we are trying to do some salvage for the occupant. get whatever belongings out that we can. >> reporter: i see the valve a shake shingle roof. did that play a part in this. >> certainly. think it's something people

welcome back. police and firefighters in san jose are helping a family save what they can after fire race the thhouse -- raced through their house. it happened about the 90 minutes ago. that's where janine de la vega is there now. what's the late, janine? >> reporter: well, firefighters -- the latest, janine? >> reporter: he well, firefighters are trying to knock this fire down. you can see the roof has collapsed in several places. neighbors have been watching this all take place. they say the mother and daughter woke up to the sounds of smoke alarms. they were able tos cape. they were too -- they were able to escape. they were too devastated to speak to us on camera. the flames were shooting out of the roof and started to spread. it almost spread to the house

next door. firefighters switched their attacking this fire on the inside. >> flames were up 20, 30 feet from the roof. all of a sudden, the trucks start showing up. >> reporter: firefighters say they are still trying to determine the cause of this fire. but we do know it cape from the attic area. we're also told that this home has a shake shingle roof and neighbors say all homes in this area are required to have a shake shingle roof. but they say that's like having firehood and that's what -- that's what helped the fire actually spread very quickly. some firefighters are taking a break after trying to knock down this firefighter. there are still firefighters in the house trying to knock down the fire hot spots.

janine de la vega, ktvu channel 2 news. >> thank you. in half an hour, a suspect at the center of a controversial police shooting in san francisco is scheduled for an arraignment. the 22-year-old faces several charges including aggravated assault on a peace officer. there were protests after a plain clothes officer shot him during a foot chase. investigators say he's a bang member -- gang member armed with a -- with a pistol. this case is one of a number of violent cases in the mission district. that's why dozens of people marched through the streets last night, calls for peace. police say they are not asking for much, they just want a safe neighborhood. >> police in morgan hill still searching for a woman accused of using her 10-year-old

plunging into the lagoon. the plane took off from san carlos airport t went up about 650 feet -- san carlos airport. if went up about 650 feet. the chronicle is reporting they want to i void outbursts like the one -- avoid outbursts like the one at this meeting. a new proposal includes eliminating almost half of the 214 seats in council chambers. instead, overflow crowds could see the meeting on a closed circuit tv in a nearby room. there's a five-year plan that will initially focus on half of the schools in the district.
